Target Audience:
This training is intended for Jurists, LGALS, prosecutors, parent attorneys, MDHHS, private agencies and tribes from the following counties: Clare, Gladwin, Isabella, and Midland.

Description:
This training will provide participants with an overview of the legal framework governing child protective proceedings, including the applicable statutes, court rules, and MDHHS policy. A documentary film, Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope, will be screened in the afternoon. The film provides information about the Adverse Childhood Experiences study and trauma informed care. The afternoon will also include training on strategies for drafting effective petitions and reports, as well as tips to improve courtroom testimony. The day will conclude with an open dialogue session to provide participants the opportunity to ask questions, address any local topics of importance, and collaborate.


Is registration required?

Yes. Registration is required and on-site registration is not available. Please do not register to attend this training unless you have scheduling flexibility and have received the necessary authorization to attend. Excessive nonattendance without prior cancellation will result in limited access to future CWS training events.

Do I have to print and bring my registration confirmation to the event?

No. There will be a sign in sheet at the SCAO-CWS registration desk outside of the meeting room.

The name on the registration doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?

No. Please use the attendee's name only.

When do I receive a Certificate of Attendance?
All attendees will receive a Certificate of Attendance via email within one week of the training. The certificates are for proof of attendance and tracking of participation hours.

What attire do you recommend?
Room temperature can fluctuate throughout the day. Please plan accordingly and dress in layers.

Is food provided?

Lunch will be generously provided to participants within State of Michigan meal rates. Due to grant restrictions, we are unable to provide breakfast or snacks. Additional meals and snacks are the responsibility of the participant. The Child Welfare Services (CWS) department is part of the Michigan State Court Administrative Office (SCAO). CWS provides assistance to circuit court family divisions on child welfare matters, including child protective proceedings, foster care, adoption, termination of parental rights, permanency outcomes, and data collection and analysis. CWS administers the Michigan Court Improvement Program (CIP), the Foster Care Review Board Program (FCRB), and the training program for the Governor’s Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect. CWS provides numerous multi-disciplinary trainings each year on a variety of child welfare issues.
